Two herrings live in the mouth of the pelican,
one keeps the house neat, the other tries their best
Both agreed on the waterbed, and the drapes that match the kitchen cabinets
They have fake windows they got at Flowes Depot,
the natural light staves off the dark
They get fresh water delivery once a day when the pelican takes its big dive of the day
They brace for it like an earthquake or a tsunami,
but the refreshment of the cool salt water rushing down the pelicans gullet, they relish in

The herrings love their pelican mouth home,
with its seaweed decor and its quiet comforts,
but most of all
they love the weightlessness of flight

They love the brief glimpses of the sky, of the world, of the stars whenever the pelican opens its mouth

Other fish dream of quiet coves, a place to hide, but not them

They wanted more

And they went for it
